Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS is typically referred to as services that hide the use of IaaS from the end-user, exposing tools and well defined programming models to the user, which in turn use the PaaS to construct SaaS solutions. Well known PaaS offerings are Google AppEngine, OpenShift, CloudFoundry, but there are many others.

The SNIC Science Cloud has the ambition to, together with users communities and projects, provide platform level services for e.g. Big Data Analytics and Interactive Computing. Currently, we have no official offerings, but there is a knowledge base and tools for e.g. provisioning of Apache Spark environments developed by some of our user groups. Software for automatic contextualization and provisioning of Ipython Clusters and Ipython Notebooks are provided in the MOLNs project, which works on SNIC cloud resources.

We would love to hear from you about your needs for PaaS solutions for e.g. Data Science, as we will use user input to prioritize the efforts in the next phase of the project. Also, we encourage contributions from skillful users.
